Costco trip
On my bi-monthly Costco trip (sometimes more) I went w/excitement and trepidation. I was excited because of all the savings I would be getting from the coupons (except from toilet paper because I bought that last month...I hate it when I do that, buy something and then it goes on sale the next week, and I already opened it so I couldn't take it back and buy it again w/the coupon). I was feeling trepidation because I knew my bill would be at least $200...so I was guessing. As I kept loading things into my cart, such as diapers, wipes, and other big items it quickly grew full. And then I started getting these looks. I've never got the looks that I give to other people who have enormously full grocery carts. You know the ones. You see the mom, usually w/1 or more kids in tow, w/at least 1, maybe even 2 grocery carts. Or even one of those flat bed carts full of stuff! Because they have a million kids at home to feed (no offense to big families) or they live out in the boonies and only shop at Costco bi-annually. And you feel bad for them. Or you stare at one of those guys that has a flat bed cart w/a bunch of napkins, condiments and such. You can guess that they are either 1)the Activities chair person in their ward and stocking up for a party or 2) they own some kind of food business/employee fridge/break room person and re-stocking their kitchen shelves because they always have cases of soda and bottled water. Whatever the case, you've seen them and feel bad for them or are at least happy it's not you. Luckily, it's Costco and you can always get through those lines lightning fast. But the point of all this is that I got those looks the last time I went to Costco. But I wasn't one of those people. I only had 1 cart! And only one box of diapers in one size! I was probably over-reacting to the scrutinizing that I thought people were giving me. LOL. But I did think it was odd. And the most frightening part of the whole trip was the bill! I have NEVER spent so much at Costco in one trip (we've never purchased any big items there like vacuums, furniture or TV's....not yet). Let me just say it was hundreds of dollars. Granted I did buy 100 stamps, Turbo Tax, diapers, wipes, and lots of dried fruit. And a lot of $10 items add up quickly!!!! So there really is no moral or point to this story other than to humor myself about my trip. So, if you did read this whole post, what has been your most frightening shopping experience?

ReplyDeleteANYWAYS every time i go to costco i feel depressed when i leave. i'll only buy 4 or 5 things and BAM it is like $80 bucks! oh and don't even get me started on the days when i have to load up on diapers, wipes, formula and tp! we are talking over a $100 and it is only 4 things! *sigh* but i do love costco and some how it all seems worth it when i score some good samples.

ReplyDeleteI remember the time I went to Smiths (about a month ago) with Sophie in her car seat. I managed to fit all of my purchases into one cart, but when the bagger got done I needed TWO carts! This little old man had to help me out to the car because I could not push two carts at once!
ReplyDeleteWow! I'm so happy I'm past that! I didn't have Costco! So sad! I love Costco!
ReplyDeleteHannah, can you ask Troy & Jana to invite me to their blog? My e-mail is charlene.labiszak@gmail.com. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. I am a Sam's girl myself, but I hate it when I have to go with all 4 kids(2 in the cart and 2 walking) and have to buy diapers, wipes, formula, milk, eggs, lunchmeant, bread, laundry detergent, oxyclean, dishwasher detergent, etc... And that is the day I spent too much time at Target and the kids haven't eaten or napped. I just don't even pay attention to the people around me at that point, haha.
ReplyDeleteIt is extremely difficult for me to escape Costco for less than $100.
ReplyDeleteI am one of those people who stocks up the shelves for work and I actually love the crazy looks people give me! I go to Costco and Macey's. The most weird looks come when I'm at Macey's. I usually fill up two carts. I feel the need every time I do it to explain to the cashier that none of this is for me! Because it's always junk food. Hilarious.
ReplyDeleteCrazy! We actually gave up our Costco membership when it expired in May because we found we were always going way over budget with Costco trips. I can truthfully say that I haven't missed it. We are better at staying on budget and I have become much more coupon/sale savvy. But, I am glad you had a good time and got lots of great things! ;)
ReplyDeleteI've had a couple frightening shopping experiences, all of them involving my kids peeing on the floor. :) NOT FUN!
ReplyDeleteI just did the same thing at sam's club! haha on sat!
