Forum

Thanks for all of your comments. I am glad to know that you are still reading!

I want to open a discussion via comments. Or just share your opinions on a variety of topics that you all can relate to.

1. We are getting a vacuum for Christmas! (some of you may have already repsonded on FB) yay! Which brand do you recommend? Why? What features do you love about it? Which do you hate? Any that you do not recommend?

2. What do you use to get stains out? Stains such as baby poop and grape juice?
I personally like to use the Clorox bleach pens for whites and Shout gel for others. On tough stains I use powdered Biz, soak it overnight if necessary. I am wondering if there is something better out there. Oh, and I used Oxi clean on baby stains w/no luck.

3. When should brothers and sisters not bathe together? Sleep in the same room?

4. What are your favorite freezer meals? I want to try and stock the freezer before the wee little one arrives.

That's all I can think of for now...I am sure I'll come up with some more later on. Thanks for your input!

  1. Vacuums: Some time ago a manager at WalMart told me that most vacuums are designed to only last 18 months. I figure the church knows a little about vacuums so I bought the same kind as is found in chapels. It was a used Windsor Versamatic VSE. The VS model is slightly newer. All parts are replaceable. It is designed to be fixed and not just thrown out. It is very light, goes under furniture and has a built-in "quick to use" hose for getting into corners etc. Designed in Germany...you know, the guys that make Audi, BMW and Mercedes Benz, Leica cameras etc. There is a Japanese knock-off, but it is reputed to not be as good.

  2. Hey Hannah...great questions!

I LOVE my vacuum and we got it about six months ago or so. It is a Hoover WindTunnel Cyclonic. I LOVE the fact that it is bagless, I highly recommend a bagless vacuum. It's so nice! And this is silly, but my favorite feature is the little button that I push to automatically wrap up the cord-love it! It seems to work really well and I love it!

I'll be checking back to see any input about stains. I love Spray and Wash and have used it forever. It seems to work really well. I also use the bleach pens, but would also love other ideas.

I quit bathing my kids together (5 and 3) about a year ago. As soon as the oldest starts noticing differences, I think it's time to call it quits. It's sure a lot easier together though, so hang on to as long as you can but also I think you need to be really careful with that one and use your own judgement.

I love casserole dishes for freezer meals. I have some great ones I love and have on http://yumstuf.blogspot.com/. Also, check under main dishes.

Great questions! I look forward to hearing others' responses as well! I hope you're doing great!

  4. I have chicken enchiladas and a mac and cheese casserole and some cooked sweet pork in my freezer right now that I made before our baby. Chicken divan is also another great recipe that is good frozen.

I personally think that brothers and sisters should stop bathing together when they begin to notice or want to touch private areas. I don't think sharing a room is a big deal at all...sometimes you only have one room for the two of them and you do what you have to!

  5. Did Dad really actually leave a real comment? Shocked.
We tried the cordless electolux, and I don't like it at all, but Electrolux is supposed to be super great, Carilee has had hers for years.
I don't do stains well, if I even try it is this stain stick that I can't remember the name, I think spray and wash stick.
I agree with Ann Marie. That is Sammy notices differences, do it separate. Don't you only have a shower right now anyway?

  6. 1. I'm no vacuum expert- we got our windtunnel from costco and like it fine, but it's nothing special. We checked around consumer reports first.
    2. For stains (especially protein stains like baby poop and spit up) I'm a huge fan of Dual Power spray n' wash.
    3. No idea, since I only have one. But I remember bathing with my brother when I was 3 or 4, meaning he was... 11 or 12? Probably a bit extreme.
    4. I need to get me some good recipes, I don't do freezer meals (unless fish sticks and red baron pizzas count)

  7. All I can say about a vacuum is don't go cheapo. A good vacuum is worth every cent. I would also recommend one that is meant to be fixed (ie, one that can be taken apart) so that if you suck up a baby sock, you don't have to throw the whole thing out. I'm also pro bagless. Ours has a container thing you just pull out and dump...very low hassle. Good luck!

  8. 1. Vacuum: I've already given you my suggestion for a Roomba so you don't have to do any of the work. Having just bought 3 brand new robots (vacuum, shop vac, and mop), I still absolutely agree with that choice.

    2. Stains: Leave the commercially advertised products alone. Try Amway's TriZyme (you can buy from eBay so as not to get sucked into the Amway black hole... like here: http://cgi.ebay.com/Amway-Legacy-of-Clean-2-2lb-TRI-ZYME-Detergent-Booster_W0QQitemZ270455154795QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3ef862286b )
OR I've been super duper pleased with Shaklee's Nature Bright (http://www.shaklee.com/00305.html). You can order online and never have to talk to anyone Shaklee.

However, for baby stains (like the poops and formula and spit-up), Amway's TriZyme has NEVER let me down.

    3. Brothers and sisters need to be separate when a) they can recognize that they are of differing sexes or b) when they can bother each other mutually.

    4. I have NEVER frozen a meal in my life. I would have no idea where to start. However, I did do Dream Dinners for over a year and loved that option.

    Good luck!

  9. 1. Get this kind: http://mark-and-andrea.blogspot.com/2008/04/vacuum.html

    2. I have no idea.

    3. I have no idea.

    4. I have no idea. We barely have enough room in our fridge freezer for all the things I'd like to keep in there--so having room for meals is a pipe dream at this point.

  10. Vacuums: Kirby, all the way! They're expensive but so so so so worth it. Just invite someone in to demonstrate for you why, OR you can buy one used at some vacuum places. I highly recommend it. And our kids were four and three when they stopped sharing a room and bathing together because they start recognizing differences in body parts and getting curious around that age... at least mine did. I guess it depends on the kids.

  11. I use oxy clean, but I keep a bucket of oxy clean water (2 scoops to a bucketful) around and just throw the baby poop stains into it. When laundry day comes around I just unload it. The great thing is that it works for colors and whites.

  12. I'd go with what your dad said. Though I bought a Simplcity vacuum 2-3 years ago and I love it. It was expensive--around $500, but it works great and has a 3 year warranty. You can turn the brush off for wood floors (or tile or brick or whatever), which saves my life.

I use oxyclean spray--it really seems to work, but most of all, the smell doesn't drive me crazy.

I recently froze a bunch of burritos. They're great heated up individually or together in a dish with enchilada sauce and cheese. You just fill tortillas with whatever you--and your kids--want (I did variations of steak, cheese, cilantro, roasted potatoes, beans, and a little enchilada sauce). Stanford easily take them to work for lunch too.

  13. Oh--and in case it's not obvious--you have to wrap the burritos individually before you freeze them. I wrapped them in parchment paper and then foil. Not exactly economical or earth friendly. I know.

  14. I got a Dyson vacuum four years ago and it is BRILLIANT, I sew a lot (of course) and have marron/plum colored carpet. One sweep over and all the threads are picked up. I got mine at Costco.

Great thing is the clear and bagless cylinder, you can see how full it is. So easy to empty. Never loses power even when it is full.

Only drawbacks - expensive but worth every cent and very heavy - no good if you have stairs.

I use Oxyclean for stains, also get it at Costco.
