Chalk Art

Jennie, we're finally using the chalk you gave us! Thank you!

I've been busy busy this summer which has been great! We just returned from a trip to Colorado, just the kids and I, last week. And I still haven't posted about the 4th yet! But I wanted to share this post first because it's fast!

Summer Fun Idea #37

Chalk Fun

We had fun coloring outside today. And then we topped it with a little hopscotch. The kids suggested using a rock. I don't really the get the purpose of throwing the rock. Maybe you're supposed to stop at the number it lands on? And then what? I think they got the idea from Curious George.

Then I found their pet rocks and we used those...until Cecily started throwing them like balls and got lost in the shrubs.

Fun times!

Rainbow Pots

For family night on Monday night, we taught the children about the biblical symbol of a rainbow. Then they got to paint their own rainbow pots!

Remember these pots from this post? I found this fun idea from Ohdeedoh.

If they went to bed nicely, which they did....well enough, they'd get to search for the pot in the morning. I told them a leprechaun was going to bring golden treats if they were good and he hid them. So after breakfast I got my Irish accent on and led them on a treasure hunt around the house until they found their pot!

I filled the pots with the almond/toffee Hershey's nuggets, but let's be honest, those are for me. They just looked more like gold bars. The kids get the regular miniature candies (pictured in pot #2). In the next few weeks we'll plant some herbs and they'll get to watch them grow,(another great FHE lesson)!

Look at their concentration. It could have been very messy if I wasn't supervising. I recommend lots of newspaper and help. Samuel, at first, didn't want to paint his rainbows because that is "for girls" and reminds of him "ponies jumping through rainbows." But once I showed him how cool it could look and the fact that the leprechauns wouldn't come if it wasn't painted because they wouldn't know which pot to fill, he gave in, and loved it, of course.

Jocelyn quietly worked on hers. Suprisingly, her's turned out a little bit cleaner (hers is pictured in the front) though Samuel loves art. I signed him up for an art class, I hope he enjoys it!

Wallace and Gromit

Last night for movie night we watched 2 of the 3 adventures of Wallace and Gromit on Netflix. At first, the kids didn't really like Wallace and Gromit. They love Chicken Run but didn't realize they're made with the same stuff, clay! They had to adjust to the quirkiness and small amounts of dialog too which is a little different from the rest of the fast past animated type films they normally watch. I didn't realize W & G are obsessed with cheese until last night.

After they watched the third adventure today they decided they wanted cheese and crackers, just like they do in the movie. Sliced cheese. Last night Samuel, before he watched the movie, insisted he did not want sliced cheese on his sandwich but shredded! Go figure! The power of media? Pickyness gone away with imagination? Who knows.

I had left out some mini-Easter cookie cutters. You see, I tried making Rice Krispie balls with peanut butter filing covered in chocolate. I tried it too with nutella. Neither worked so well. They fell apart and did not stay on their stick. Needless to say, I failed and will have to attempt to make them again after some adjustments so I can show you. But they did taste good! So, I had the cookie cutters out and I showed the kids how to have cute little crackers and cheese! Fun times!

Okay, that was a really long explanation. Now you get "crackin" and "cut some cheese!" Har, har.

First Irrigation Day

It's like playing in the ditch after a huge rainstorm. They kept asking when it was going to get warm. haha.

Floating pine cones through the gate, all sorts of treasures discovered after the winter, and a little wooden, splinter heavy bridge. And then they started to have fun which meant no shoes and other unmentionables.
